2nd DAY. 4 th of September.
Vilnius – Trakai – Vilnius (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – optional) Breakfast at Hotel.
At 9 a.m., after breakfast in your hotel, we will drive to the picturesque town of Trakai, which is 40 minutes away from Vilnius. This historic town is best known for its 14th century castle which sits on an island in the middle of Lake Galvé and was once one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. We will visit Trakai Castle.
We will have a traditional lunch in Trakai in the Apvalaus stalo restaurant with its magnificent view of the castle and we will sample some authentic local cuisine, ‘kibinas’ made by Karaims.
After lunch, we will return to Vilnius where we will have a bus tour of Vilnius.
The tour will last for 2 hours and will include the Seimas (parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, the KGB museum, and Cathedral Square.
We will stop in Užupis district and visit St. Anne’s Church and continue to the Gates of Dawn.
Our visit to the KGB museum will include the services of a professional guide. The museum is located in the former KGB building, where the crimes of the Soviet regime were planned and executed for 50 years.
Our Walking Tour through Vilnius old Town (1.5 hours) will start at the Gates of Dawn. We will take you through the main sights of Vilnius Old Town, which we ourselves never tire of visiting. You will see impressive Gothic and Baroque churches, the Presidential Palace, Vilnius University and the Jewish Quarter among many other impressive sights. As you walk through the charming narrow streets you will end up at the open-air gallery called Artworks on Literatu str. and you might even spot some locals drying their laundry in the narrowest street of Vilnius.
In the evening you will be free to explore the city at your own pace or there is the OPTION to have a traditional Lithuanian dinner at Ertlio namai restaurant (40 EUR per person). Overnight in a 4* hotel in Vilnius.
3rd DAY. 5th of September.
Vilnius – Hill of Crosses – Nuclear Missile Base – Plateliai (Breakfast, Dinner) Breakfast at Hotel.
After breakfast, at 8 a.m., we will depart for the Hill of Crosses and will stop at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church. The church is considered a masterpiece of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Baroque. We will drive to the UNESCO heritage site of the Hill of Crosses, a site of pilgrimage, about 12 km north of Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. This is a site not to be missed. You will be fascinated by the sight of 100,000 crosses built and brought to this spiritual place by pilgrims of all religions and faiths.
Later we will continue our trip to Plokstine (2,5 hours’ drive) where we will visit the former Cold War ICBM Missile base – the only museum of its kind in Europe. You will have a guided tour of the museum and have the unique opportunity to see the shaft where the Soviets kept missiles with nuclear warheads ready to be launched.
After the tour we will drive to Pas tevukus a local self-catering cottage where we will spend the night. These spacious ethnographic countryside style cottages on the shore of Lake Beržoras are the ideal place to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Lake Beržoras.
Our hosts will prepare a traditional Samogitian dinner (the western region of Lithuania). Overnight in Pas tevukus.
4 th DAY. 6 th of September.
Plateliai – Nida – Palanga (Breakfast, Lunch) Homemade breakfast.
After breakfast, we will drive to the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO heritage site.
We will first stop at the ‘Hill of Witches’ in Juodkranté. This public trail through the woods will take you through the best-known legends and stories in Lithuanian folk history with its 80 different wooden carvings from local artists. We will also say ‘Hi’ to one of Europe’s largest colonies of cormorants and herons which have amassed in a colony in the forest. It is well worth climbing the wooden steps to the viewing platform where the 360-degree panoramic views of nests amid the pine trees will astonish you.
We must not forget the other senses and so we will stop for lunch at the home of a local fisherman who will offer us fish that has been smoked just a few hours earlier – life rarely gets better than this. It is the tradition of every local visitor to eat Curonian smoked fish and to get it directly from a fisherman is an experience in itself.
We will then continue our tour to the most western town of Lithuania – Nida – which many Lithuanians consider to be the best place on earth. We will stop here and enjoy the breathtaking panorama from the 52mhigh Parnidis dune and have a stroll by the lagoon.
In the afternoon, we will take a ferry and return to Klaipėda, the port town of Lithuania.
Optional dinner at Svyturys brewery and a brewery visit. Overnight in a Hotel in Klaipėda.
5 th DAY. 7 th of September. Departure (B)
After breakfast, we will drive the group to Palanga airport for your flight home.
