Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, is a gem of boutique vintage shops, pocket-sized microbreweries and an historic old town characterised by cobblestone streets and baroque and neoclassical churches.<\/p>\n

Today, the city has a thriving arts and food scene, numerous museums and, in the tongue-in-cheek, self-declared Republic of Uzupis, a healthy sense of the absurd.<\/p>\n

Urban Adventures\u2019 Made in Vilnius\u00a0tour<\/a><\/span>\u00a0provides insight into the city\u2019s history, culture and culinary fare. Sights include a walk along Stikliu\u00a0street, popular for glassware, and\u00a0Hales market<\/span><\/a>, a traditional food market that\u2019s the place to go for smoked meats, fresh coffee and Lithuanian cheese. The goat\u2019s cheese from\u00a0<\/span>Roots<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is also superb.<\/p>\n

Visit the Presidential Palace<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the warmer months, the beautiful gardens at the\u00a0Presidential Palace<\/a><\/span>\u00a0are open to the public. However, with a history dating back to 1387, the palace itself is worth visiting, its ornate interiors laden with historical significance. Tours of the palace are free, but only\u00a0take place\u00a0on Fridays at 4.30pm and Saturdays from 9am-2.30pm.<\/p>\n

Look out at the city from Three Crosses<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Three Crosses monument in Kalnai Park boasts some of the best views in the city and, despite its proximity to the old town, has the atmosphere of a countryside escape. Nearby Stalo kalnas (Table Hill) is popular for barbecues and bonfires in the summer months. One of the few hilly parts of the city, it\u2019s ideal for a bracing, early morning walk, particularly in spring when the violets start to bloom.<\/p>\n

Visit Uzupis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The self-declared \u201crepublic\u201d of Uzupis is a lot closer to art lover\u2019s heaven Metelkova in Slovenia than it is Denmark\u2019s politically charged Freetown Christiania. Perched on the fringes of the old town, the district is home to a number of restaurants, hole-in-the-wall pubs like\u00a0Spunka<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and unique art installations which sit on the banks of the River Vilnia. Take a stroll up to Vilnius St Bartholomew the Apostle Church and you\u2019ll discover fantastic views over the city, the sky dotted with hot air balloons during the summer.<\/p>\n

Check out the museums<\/strong><\/p>\n

For a city of its size, Vilnius boasts a huge number of museums. One of the most poignant is the\u00a0<\/span>Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights<\/span><\/a>. Housed in the former headquarters of the communist-era KGB, it details the crimes of the previous regime with startling candour. Alternatively, head to the Vilnius Academy of Arts to visit\u00a0Titanikas<\/a>, a free exhibit of contemporary art.<\/p>\n

Where to stay<\/strong><\/p>\n

Artis Centrum Hotel<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is ideally located in the city\u2019s old town, right next to the Presidential Palace. Where to eat<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a commitment to native, seasonal ingredients,\u00a0Sweet Root<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is one of the best restaurants in the city. Its three-hour dining experience serves up portions that are sparse but immaculately presented, and guests receive a \u201cscorecard\u201d to tick off each ingredient served as the evening progresses.<\/p>\n

For a more traditional experience,\u00a0Mykolo 4<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a small, family-run restaurant in the old town with an excellent range of Italian and French wines.<\/p>\n

Meat Lovers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is an altogether more hefty affair, with steak, ribs and burgers, while\u00a0Keule Ruke<\/a><\/span>, close to the train station, is a hipster\u2019s paradise, with provocative street art and a laid-back, outdoor seating area.<\/p>\n

Where to drink<\/strong><\/p>\n

The story behind the naming of microbrewery\u00a0Busi Trecias<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is as interesting as the flavours of its homemade craft beers, but you\u2019ll have to ask its young manager to tell the story. If you\u2019re lucky, his father will sit down to chat with you too \u2013 as he doesn\u2019t speak a word of English, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll bond over a shot instead.<\/p>\n

B\u016bsi\u00a0Tre\u010dias\u00a0specialises in craft beers (B\u016bsi\u00a0Tre\u010dias)<\/p>\n

Snekutis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is one of the most legendary pubs in the city; its charismatic, heavily bearded owner Valentas Vaskevicius can still be found behind the taps from time to time.<\/p>\n

For hot drinks and vegan snacks, check out\u00a0Chaika<\/a><\/span>, or head to bakery\u00a0Kmynine<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for superior coffee.<\/p>\n

Where to shop<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vilnius isn\u2019t short on shops. The larger shopping centres are located in the new city, while the centre is better known for its amber, glassware and arts and craft shops.<\/p>\n

Veer slightly away from the historic old town and you\u2019ll find the most interesting places.\u00a0Smells Like Spells<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a boutique in the city centre where you\u2019ll find candles, incense and perfumes made with natural ingredients, while\u00a0Sirena<\/a><\/span>, right next door, makes elegant, handmade leather bags.<\/p>\n

For natural arts, crafts and health foods, try\u00a0siMona<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Sventasis Stepono gatve (St Stephen\u2019s street).<\/p>\n

Architectural highlight<\/strong><\/p>\n

It may get crowded, but the Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius, better known as Vilnius Cathedral, is gorgeous, with historic frescos and elegant facades.<\/p>\n

What currency do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Euros.<\/p>\n

What language do they speak?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lithuanian. English is fairly well spoken, particularly among the younger generation.<\/p>\n

Tipping of around 10 per cent is generally expected.<\/p>\n

Vilnius is GMT+2.<\/p>\n

When\u2019s best to go?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vilnius has large and ornate Christmas markets in December, but the city really comes to life in the spring and summer when locals enjoy walking in its parks, or relaxing by the Vilnia.<\/p>\n

Public transport<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to get around Vilnius on foot, but the city has a strong trolley and bus service, with 30-minute tickets priced at \u20ac0.65.<\/p>\n

Insider tip<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nodding when your waiter takes payment in restaurants can give the impression that you\u2019re happy for them to keep the change. Simply say \u201cthank you\u201d. Try to have some change on you, as staff are more likely to keep the tips this way.<\/p>\n
